top city breaks for under £100

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

I’m not going to lie to you. In order to take a two-night weekend break for less than £100pp, including flights and hotel, you are almost certainly going to have to go with Ryanair. Or possibly EasyJet. This means bun fights and grumpiness and the long shot of being left stranded and unloved on the wrong side of Europe. Also, you aren’t going to be flying out Friday, back Sunday. It’s much, much cheaper to go Saturday to Monday… so you’ll just have to bunk off work on Monday instead of Friday.

Which is no biggie.

While I’m at it, your hotel will not be five-star. It probably won’t even be three-star. In estate-agent parlance, it is likely to be well located but basic. Because the pound doesn’t go nearly as far on the Continent as it did a year ago.

But, and it’s a big, gyrating, sexy but, you are getting a fabulous long weekend in one of Europe’s great cities for just £100pp. Which is about one-eighth of a pensioner’s gas bill. The hotels might be basic but they’re great value and perfect as a two-night sleep-and-go base… and those Ryanair flights? No problem after a 7am Stansted bloody mary or two. No problem at all.

Mix it together, heat it up and if you want to add a “little kick” to it, really spice it up with a little brandy. It has a great aroma and tastes even better!

Glühwein (Hot Mulled Wine)

Next on our Christmas drink recipe search let’s see what Germany has to offer. A warm wine drink is what we will find here. It’s called Glühwein (Hot Mulled Wine) and like Wassail it tastes and smells great.

Who would have thought that you could that you not only make a fun, delicious new drink, but also give your house a cheerful, delicious holiday aroma that will warm the hearts of your guests as well. Imagine your fragrant house filled with friends and family sampling your new holiday recipe ideas…It’s going to be a great holiday season!

Cafe Mexican

The next Christmas drink idea is from our neighbors to the south…Mexico! Everyone loves a hot cup of Joe after dinner, but you can make that ordinary cup of coffee a gourmet delight with a recipe for Cafe Mexico! A combination of spices and a dollop of whipped cream will turn your after dinner coffee into a dessert! You can add some Kahlua coffee liqueur, or you can serve the non-alcoholic version.

American Eggnog

Finally, we have the old American holiday drink recipe…Eggnog. This is a drink you’re probably familiar with. It’s a holiday standard in my house but we like to add a little brandy or triple sec to give it a little vigor! This traditional holiday drink warms you from the inside out on a cold winters’ night.

North Carolina Foreclosure

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

p>Information released by North Carolina property tracking firm RealtyTrac for October 2008 showed that the number of foreclosed homes in North Carolina continued to decline by 20% in the month year-on-year. The data shows that foreclosed rate in the state rose compared to September. Analysts note that the data may indicate declining foreclosed homes volume in North Carolina.

What is the implication of the data? For North Carolina homebuyers and investors, the buying spree for cheap foreclosed homes in the state may near bottom. For quite some time, North Carolina has not turned out as many foreclosed homes as in other states. Specifically, the number of foreclosures is very slim at one home in every 1,254 homes. That is far lower than the national average in October 2008 of a home in every 452 homes.

That is why it is not surprising that there is a slim chance for any North Carolina homebuyer to buy cheap foreclosed homes in the state. However, hope should not be totally shed. There are still numerous foreclosed homes for sale listed in North Carolina foreclosure listings. Anyone who would want to snap up houses in the state could just check out such listings and be on auctions to be able to seize available opportunities.

The housing industry is starting to rise. The state is expected to follow the initiatives of other states in implementing neighborhood stabilization schemes so that households could be helped to prevent foreclosures. Now that there are still more than enough assets listed at North Carolina foreclosure listings, prospective homebuyers and investors should seize the opportunities and snap up cheap homes while supplies last.

Getting a better night’s slumber

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Your brain clock is a cluster of brain cells in the hypothalamus that determines your sleep-wake time and is regulated by light and darkness, explains Delwyn Bartlett, a sleep psychologist with the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. Here’s how to keep it on track:

* Wake up at the same time every morning, even on weekends. This is more important than going to bed at the same time every night. "Waking up at the same time cues your brain to release sleep-wake hormones at the right time," she says.

* Get the light right. Melatonin, the sleep hormone that gets your brain ready for sleep, needs diminishing levels of light to help it kick in. Bright light - or staring at your laptop - can delay its effects. Keep lights in the bedroom low before you go to sleep. Have curtains that let you wake up to morning light.

* Check your blankets. To feel sleepy, your body temperature needs to fall. An overheated bedroom or an electric blanket turned up too high can make it hard to sleep. But a warm bath an hour before bed can help your temperature fall. The warm water artificially raises your temperature, which then has to come down once you’re out of the bath.

* Think about what you drink and eat before bed. Drinks containing caffeine - coffee, tea, cocoa and cola - can keep you awake. Although caffeine’s stimulant effect is strongest in the first hour or so after taking it, it can still be in your system eight hours later. While alcohol helps you doze off quickly, drinking too much too close to bedtime can backfire. One drink might be OK but too much can fragment your sleep because of falling blood-alcohol levels that can wake you up later in the night.

Google reports sharp decline in profits

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Google Inc. reported sharply lower fourth-quarter profits Thursday from bad investments, while its core business showed resilience amid the global recession.

google1 The results, which beat analysts’ expectations, were enough to dispel investor concerns about how the company is weathering the gloomy economy. But at the same time, the earnings highlighted the fact that the Mountain View Internet leader isn’t immune from the downturn.

Google said fourth-quarter profit fell 68 percent to $382 million ($1.21 per share), from $1.2 billion ($3.79) a year ago. Much of the decline was attributed to a $1.09 billion charge for soured investments in wireless provider Clearwire and in the AOL Web portal, owned by Time Warner.

Cluster Headache Symptoms and Treatments

Friday, January 16th, 2009

There is an incapacitating disorder that hits a small portion of the population without any forewarning-cluster headaches. Their attacks come at what seem to be haphazard time periods-which is exactly how cluster headaches got their title. Sufferers of cluster headaches may have to endure them for days or even weeks on end, and still be able to go for a year, two years or even more without a cluster headache. Stress, drugs, and alcohol are all thought to bring on attacks of cluster headaches; however, the real cause is not truly known. However, with none of these factors, a person may still end up with a series of cluster headaches at any point in time. Due to the severity and clear-cut symptoms, it is easy to tell the difference between a normal headache and a cluster headache.

Cluster headache sufferers will frequently have a runny nose or eyes. The pain, usually described by sufferers as an icepick, has a tendency to concentrate in the area at the back of one eye. This enormously painful feeling usually turns into a highly severe, painful feeling often setting off a pain emergency in the patient. The pain is usually severe enough to create excessive reactions and very illogical behavior. It is imperative that the sufferer of a cluster headache get immediate treatment. Easing the overwhelming pain that often goes along with cluster headaches can be done with pain killers and sedatives, such as narcotics and tranquilizers.

Due to the randomness of cluster headaches, treatment is not easily accomplished. Changing your lifestyle tends to be the better choice than being stuck on medicine for the rest of your life-and not knowing if the medicine will work or not. Since one of the biggest triggers is drugs and alcohol, avoiding them would be a good first step. Due to the fact that avoiding a cluster headache is tricky at best, treatments like narcotics, or tranquilizers are a necessity to have at hand.

Cluster headache sufferers know that a visit to the doctor is needed when the headaches become frequent. Of course, they can happen with no known reason, but they can also be a sign of a bigger issue, neurologically. Should this be the case, it is imperative that treatment be taken by the patient as soon as possible.

Stress management-in several forms, such as yoga, exercise or herbal teas to help relax-could possibly be considered successful treatment for cluster headaches. Stress and its role in the cluster headache’s treatment is not crystal clear at this point. However, stress has been shown to be a factor in other types of headaches as well, so it could possibly affect the cluster headaches, too. Physiological symptoms in a wide variety can be caused by stress-especially a lot of emotional stress-and be a huge factor in the cause of cluster headaches, too.
