New Nokia Smartphone Patent Features Swiveling Widescreen and QWERTY

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

A new patent from Nokia shows a pretty interesting new design: a full widescreen that can swivel behind a QWERTY keyboard so only half the screen is visible.

When held in one position, the phone looks a lot like Nokia’s traditional QWERTY candybars, but the screen can swivel up and out to present a widescreen, presumably for media or web browsing, apps that need a lot of screen real estate. It’s a cool way to combine the appeal of a giant touchscreen with the utility of a QWERTY keyboard, except unlike sliders like the T-Mobile G1 or the Sidekick, the keys are always available on this concept. The screen can also apparently rotate side to side, though I’m not really sure what use could be had from that.

It’s just a patent, and I’m sure there are a number of reasons why this idea won’t come to fruition (how is that screen attached?). But I like the idea and maybe we’ll see elements of it in future products from Nokia.

French Property Trends For 2009

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

According to Brice Bonato, Managing Guide of Sextant French Property Agents, the French property market looks set for an interesting 2009, due to a combination of further price reductions, cut in interest rates and a good deal of properties on offers, both in resale and new build in France markets.

Although most of the people here in the UK looking to secure a property in France seem to be “waiting to see what will happen”, especially with the current state of the Sterling, others are actively looking and negotiating very adequate deals. In fact, some have realised that given the combination of price reductions and lower offers being accepted, prices of most properties on the French exchange have remained stable in sterling terms - the 25% fall in the pound’s value that occurred over the past year has put many latent purchasers off; which is easily understandable.

Indeed, the current situation favours purchasers rather than vendors, and most are accepting offers that would have seemed comical simply a few months ago. Everybody is in agreement that the first six months of 2009 should remain a buyer’s market and as such be an excellent time to buy a haecceity in France. Then it would not be surprising to see prices go up again, and then, as a consequence, the return of mass purchasers; the best deals will be gone by then as vendors won’t be in a class where they have to agree to low offers.

In the Cotes d’Armor department of Brittany , which has always been the most popular market with British expatriates, not only for its reliable connection with the British isles, but also because of its long-established transport links with the UK, the average cost for a house is now 161 540 €; even though Brits purchased less properties in this corner of France over the last year than in days due to the economic downturn, they still represented 25% of buyers in the first part of 2008. Areas further afield like Loudeac or Carhaix Plouguer tarry favourites as prices are considerably cheaper than resorts closer to the sea like Saint Malo for example; it is not strange to see habitable properties go under 50,000€ in traditional little villages such as these.

In the Dordogne, also a popular destination for land hunters from the UK, the average cost for a house is now 150 100 €; the credit crisis is now having a dramatic impact on the prices of properties that have, in the career, been popular with British buyers, especially the higher value and stone houses properties that are at reduced prices as owners are conveying a willingness to receive much lower offers. In the North of the department, in hamlets like Nontron or small villages such as La Coquille, prices leftovers really cheaper than the area surrounding Bergerac (where one would find the international airport) and guaranteed bargains are to be made by people with a ample knowledge of the market.

In the Limousin, which remains the cheapest place in France for someone looking to purchase a idiosyncrasy, the average cost for a house is now 92 200 €; the Creuse department remains the cheapest of all with a 2-bedroom house costing an ordinary 68 600 €. Prices are expected to drop a further 5% to 10% in the course of 2009, but nobody really expects it to go below this as prices are already very low. On top of that, the onset of the new airport in Brive la Gaillarde (expected soon) should see prices in the Correze department increase, especially in the villages that could be reached in less than 1 hour from the universal airport.

In the Languedoc region, the favourite place for brits looking for the sun, alongside the French eatables, wine and way of living, the average cost of a house is now 209 500 €; the Aude department, popular with people looking around Carcassonne and Perpignan, or commonly close to the sea, remains the cheapest with a 2-bedroom house costing an average 157 900 € - the Gard and Herault departments, most in with people looking for a Provence-style move, are very close in prices, with the average cost for a house being respectively 231,500 € and 232 000 € - prices in this locality are expected to drop a further 5% to 10% over the next year but most properties are having their prices reduced and owners seem satisfied to accept much lower offers in this corner of France also.

Finally, in the Normandy region, also a traditional terminus for property hunters from the UK due to the proximity to England, the average cost for a house is now 156 800 €; prices have decreased during 2008 and are expected to stabilize next year.

As a conclusion, the uncertainty in Britain in blow-by-blow and in the world in general may encourage people to buy in France. Indeed, compared with the other overseas markets, France offers a very preservative purchasing system and low capital gain tax, and is a long standing tried and tested market without the various risks that some of the emerging markets proposition. And, in today’s current climate, safety is priceless.

Apple unveils software updates, new laptop

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

(01-06) 12:59 PST SAN FRANCISCO – There was no Steve Jobs or game-changing gadget at Macworld’s keynote presentation Tuesday, but Apple marketing chief Philip Schiller kept things lively by introducing eye-catching software updates and a supercharged, sleek MacBook Pro.

Schiller, who handles worldwide product marketing and was a last-minute stand-in for Jobs, capped off the Cupertino tech giant’s final year of participation in the expo, which runs through Friday at Moscone Center in San Francisco.

With Apple exiting the Macworld stage and Jobs being treated for a hormonal imbalance, Schiller offered announcements devoid of huge surprises. Rumors of an Apple netbook or large iPod Touch weren’t realized, but Schiller seemed to have a good time talking up the Mac platform and updates to the Apple family.

“I’m so personally excited to be the one delivering Macworld 2009 to you. I’d like to thank everybody for showing up,” he said.

The presentation included updates to the iLife and iWork software suites, a new 17-inch MacBook Pro with an 8-hour battery and a new digital rights management-free iTunes library with tiered pricing.

Starting at $2,799 and available in late January, the new MacBook Pro features Apple’s unibody aluminum enclosure, which other models received this past summer. But the big news was the battery life for the machine, which has a 40-percent larger battery capable of up to eight hours of continuous use.

Apple engineers worked with advanced chemistry, monitoring technology and power distribution to develop a battery able to last over 1,000 charges, a lifespan that is three times the industry standard, Schiller said. The laptop is a svelte .98 inches thick and 6.6 pounds; offers Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.93 GHz, up to 8 GB of RAM, both discrete and integrated graphic chips from Nvidia, 320 GB of hard drive space, and an LED backlit display that has 1920 x 1200 resolution with 78 percent more pixels than its 15-inch sibling.

Schiller showed off new versions of iLife ‘09 and iWork ‘09. The iLife software includes a new iPhoto program with face detection capability that allows users to organize their picture library by - you guessed it - faces. Users also can organize photos by location using geo-tagged pictures. And iPhoto includes a new slide show feature with upgraded effects that can be synced to an iPhone or iPod Touch.

IMovie, which got a major makeover last year, adds more granular touch and powerful features, addressing one complaint of the updated iMovie. Video editors can apply new effects, sync audio better and smooth out jumpy footage using a new video stabilization feature.

GarageBand was upgraded with Learn to Play, an interactive musical tutorial for guitar and keyboard students. The software comes bundled with nine lessons for each instrument. To learn from big names such as Norah Jones and Sting, users can pay $5 for their instruction on one song.

IWork ‘09 features updates to its document, spreadsheet and presentation software, giving programs with more effects, themes and now the ability to share documents online through iWork.com. IWork.com, which is free during the testing period, allows people in many locations to collaborate on shared documents, which can be pulled up from any Web browser.

ITunes is finally getting a full slate of digital rights protection-free music that will come in a higher-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding format. About 8 million songs will be available immediately, and by the end of the quarter the remaining 2 million songs also will be available without digital rights management protections.

Also, Apple is now offering music at three price points: 69 cents, the traditional 99 cents and $1.29. Most albums will still sell for $9.99. The move satisfies one of the longer-running complaints of the music labels, which have wanted more flexibility in pricing in the iTunes Music Store. Users can upgrade their existing library of songs to DRM-free iTunes Plus for 30 cents a track or 30 percent of an album price.

And iPhone users will be able to download songs from the iTunes Music Store over AT&T’s 3G cellular network instead of waiting to access Wi-Fi.

Analysts said the keynote presentation was a notch below previous ones, which Jobs used to introduce products like the iPhone and the MacBook Air.

Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, said that Apple this year opted to tout its overall marketing message instead of introducing lots of new hardware.

“The emphasis is more on the products and the value of the software and the Mac,” he said. “The platform is growing, and the keynote is a way for Apple to show the strides it’s made in the industry.”

Mike McGuire, a Gartner Research analyst, said Apple has outgrown Macworld and is probably happy to have more flexibility to announce products outside of the expo’s schedule. Indeed, Schiller said that the Apple Stores attract 3.4 million people a week or “a hundred Macworlds a week.”

“Apple is still able to get (analysts and media) out to their stand-alone product announcements, so there is no longer a need for one fixed date on the calendar,” McGuire said.

With Apple’s departure and the decline of tech trade shows in general, the event’s future is in doubt. Bajarin said there might now be an opportunity to retool the event to allow more vendors to shine.

“Apple had a strong say on who could be on the floor at Macworld,” he said. “Apple not being there will have a big impact, but it could be an opportunity for other vendors to step up and use this show as a showcase.”

Snoring or Soaring? Strength of Fruit-Fly Immune System Varies With Daily Cycle, Stanford Researchers Find

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

STANFORD, Calif., Dec 14, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — A fruit fly’s immune system can tell time, researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have found, and how hard it punches back against infections depends on whether the fly is snoozing or cruising. The discovery could have implications for human health, too.

Working with jerry-rigged, light-bulb-laden shoeboxes to manipulate the flies’ daily cycle and with syringes small enough to inject measured amounts of germs into the wee winged ones, the investigators have shown that the insects’ immune response waxes and wanes with the diurnal oscillations called circadian rhythms.

Mimi Shirasu-Hiza, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar in the laboratory of David Schneider, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, will present the findings Dec. 14 at the annual meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology, held in San Francisco.

Insects do not have the advanced artillery that characterizes vertebrate immune systems — antibody-secreting B-cells, and killer and helper T-cells that precisely target specific pathogens for attack. But they do share with vertebrate organisms a primitive, but critical, rough-and-ready response to unwanted microbes: the innate immune system. This all-important first line of defense, without which we wouldn’t survive an infection for the week or two it takes for our more-sophisticated antibodies and T-cells to kick into high gear, whirls into action at once, based on its ability to recognize generic patterns that distinguish microbial pests.

One feature of the fruit fly’s innate immune system is the presence of circulatory cells called phagocytes that, like our own white blood cells, engulf and digest bacteria. In their new research, Shirasu-Hiza and Schneider have found that phagocytes’ activity oscillates throughout the day.

Like the mosquito, platypus and whitetail deer, fruit flies are crepuscular — they are most active at dawn and dusk, tend to roam a bit during the daytime, and engage in what passes for sleep during the nighttime. (Flies don’t have eyelids, so it’s hard to tell if they’re really asleep. Researchers instead characterize cyclical patterns of rest and activity in terms of the number of movements per five-minute cycle.)

Shirasu-Hiza flummoxed flies into a 12-hour, circadian-rhythm phase shift by raising them in shoeboxes, wired by Schneider with timers that controlled batteries of light bulbs. This enabled the researchers to infect two sets of flies (from “nighttime” or “daytime” shoeboxes) in a single experimental session. This Shirasu-Hiza did, using syringes fashioned from glass capillary tubes heated and then stretched so that they were extremely thin, but still hollow. Armed with these syringes — which are powered by a machine called a “Picospritzer” — she spent hours on end in a dark room lit only by a red bulb (red light doesn’t seem to perturb the daily rhythms of the flies) while injecting, one by one, multiple hundreds of tiny, week-old male flies (half of them sleeping, the other half awake) per session with precise volumes of solutions containing different pathogenic bacteria.

In previously published research, when Shirasu-Hiza and her colleagues had infected normal flies with measured doses of two noted human pathogens, Streptococcus pneumoniae or Listeria monocytogenes, the sickened flies’ circadian rhythms were disturbed. They stumbled around more randomly, and stood still for relatively shorter periods. Moreover, genetic mutants lacking circadian cycles of rest and activity died more quickly on infection with these pathogens than normal flies did.

In the new round of experiments, the researchers observed that, consistent with those earlier findings, the activity of phagocytes in normal fruit flies oscillates with their circadian rhythms. Flies infected with S. pneumonia or L. monocytogenes during resting periods (”nighttime”) also survive significantly longer than those infected during active periods (”daytime”). Further, by injecting fluorescently labeled dead bacteria into flies at different points in their circadian cycle, the investigators could see increased phagocyte function at night for those two pathogens: there was an increase in the number of bacteria ingested by phagocytes in flies infected during resting versus active phases. Likewise, circadian-mutant flies “trapped” in the active phase had decreased phagocyte function, demonstrating that phagocyte activity is subject to regulation by circadian proteins whose activity, in turn, is disrupted by these mutations.

Strangely, though, infecting the flies with a third bacterial pathogen, Burkholderia cepacia, produced the opposite result. Circadian-mutant flies coped better with the infection than did normal flies, suggesting that in this case, a disrupted circadian rhythm might actually be good for the flies.

That poses an intellectual challenge, Schneider said: “If a sick fruit fly were to walk into my office, and it were infected with Burkholderia, I would know that I should deprive it of sleep. But I don’t know the rules for people. In hospitals, nurses and orderlies are going in and out all the time, and you never get any sleep. Is that good, or bad? There are probably conditions where that’s going to make things much worse. But maybe there are some conditions where it’s actually better for you to have your sleep continuously interrupted. We’re trying to figure out the rules for the fly, and hopefully someone else can translate it into human biology: Do they put you in a quiet room, or do they keep coming in and fiddling with your IV on purpose?”

The work was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Ever walked past someone’s garden and been so enraptured by the front yard that you hardly registered what the house looked like? In these days of the difficult-to-shift property market, that is the kind of garden you want.

Front yards that have appeal may draw a buyer into your home. If they like the way you have finished your yard - they may think that they will like the way you have finished your home.

At this time of the year a yard is more about evergreens and accessories than flowers, as there are very few blooms available. Also - and for this reason - it is at this time of year that the Japanese garden stands out. A Japanese garden can lend itself to almost any climate, from snowy to humid, from rainy to desert.

To get an idea of the look of a Japanese garden, first look in a few magazines or books at the library, or check out some illustrations on the Internet. Pick illustrations that look similar to the same size and shape as the layout of your garden. Depending on your preference you may wish to copy some layout plans or ideas.pa-zen-garden-zen-gardening

Japanese gardens are traditionally ruled by Zen philosophy. Each feature has a deeper representation which you can ponder on, once you are aware of them. As you walk through your Japanese Zen area each day, you may even absorb some of the peace embedded in the Zen philosophy. These ideas for your own Japanese front yard will be discussed in two parts.

Firstly, in “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 1?, the focus is on ambience, focal points, rocks and lanterns; then a follow up in “Your Own Japanese Garden: Part 2? explores plants, water, bridges, vessels and aged items. These combined features help to form the Japanese Zen garden.

There are several factors of this look that can be touched on to create an unusual garden. In an abstract way, the qualities that the gardens are representing are peace and tranquility, and in Zen philosophy, this is created by simplicity.

The relaxing ambience that encourages meditation can be achieved by placing a bamboo or rattan chair plus a small table near a wall, or in front of a lattice fence. If your garden is in a hot part of the country, group the seats under a tree or parasol. Stillness is the key word here.

Two other abstract notions suggested in a Zen garden are represented physically by a focal point that is not placed centrally, and secondly, a ‘window’ to a hidden part in your garden.

This can be represented by a piece of tall, latticed fence work, or a tree with shrubs around, or a pagoda, or even simply a bench that is partly concealed. This ‘hide and reveal’ theme is suggestive of the quest for human enlightenment and it also offers privacy. You may wish to incorporate your seating here for that reason.

The introduction of something tall lends itself to the look of the Japanese garden. Western gardens tend to be larger and boast a flat expanse of lawn; Japanese homes usually have tiny gardens. They tend to be more vertical, and tall shrubs will often be placed to hide the house from the street.

For an inexpensive focal point, you can dig a bed and put a bamboo or a red Japanese maple (miniature or full size) plus other plants in it. The bamboo bushes and trees will live in most mild North American areas, though you may have to ‘cover it’ in severe frosts. A very large cactus or groupings of cacti will also make an interesting focal point.

Smaller beds can be dug in across the yard. The center of the yard is deliberately left empty, and a lack of symmetry is desired. This reflects the lack of perfection in the world!
