Monday, August 31st, 2009

Cheap cruises from Auckland are a good way to spend your vacation in the South Pacific. And if you are already in Auckland, these sea trips are also an excellent idea to cap off a holiday in the city - itself having a long standing affinity with the sea. All the charm and liveliness of this city in New Zealand start and end with the waterfront and the open sea. So, it is not surprising that any of the cruises that sail off the city’s harbor will provide passengers with a unique and relaxing experience of New Zealand and other places in the South Pacific.

But aside from the cheap cruises in Auckland, tourists can also enjoy the big variety of facilities and sights spread out across the city. Thus, it’s always a good idea to spend a few days in Auckland before heading out for a cruise. Surrounded by rich forests and natural volcanic formations, the biggest city in New Zealand offers an atmosphere that combines both natural beauty and a thriving city life.

Typically, a cruise would start at the Waitemata Harbour. This port is the closest one in the city’s downtown area. The harbor itself is home to very interesting sights. Here, tourists will find first rate culinary delights and marvelous shopping centers. Another stopover to look forward to is Waiheke Island where you can experience fantastic farmlands, vineyards and beaches. This island is usually included in most Auckland cruise packages.

The cheap cruises from Auckland also give travelers a chance to explore other parts of the North Island. Apart from volcanic hills and abundant forests, the island is also home to several vineyards and world-class beaches. All these destinations are located just a few minutes’ drive from the center of the city. When on a cruise in Auckland, make it a point to visit the Sky Tower, where you can have an awesome view of the local landscapes. There are also tons of activities like abseiling, kayaking, and bungee jumping for the traveler who wants to get the adrenaline rush.

Cheap cruises from Auckland are a very popular tourist attraction and not just in New Zealand! The city has been dubbed as the cruise hub in Australasia and nearby territories. And it’s not just the local scenery that promotes tourism in this part of New Zealand. The friendly smiles and the welcoming atmosphere that transfuses the city entices many visitors to experience Auckland.

Car Of The Future

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Want to impress your friends and possibly score a girlfriend? How about purchasing this sweet-ass "Fastlane" car of the future? You can "Buy It Now" on eBay for a cool $15,000. But before you push the button: It’s not really a car. It’s a shell designed to fit on top of a Pontiac Fiero. Which is not included in the auction. So, yeah. It was designed for Universal Pictures by concept car maker Trans FX for use in a movie or something. future-car-1 I know it can’t actually go anywhere, but I still think I want it. I’ll just use a flatbed trailer to tote it to the bar and then slide it off into a parking spot. Then I’ll proceed to get some lucky lady extremely drunk and ask if she wants to see my fancy sports car from the future. Hopefully she won’t notice there’s not a goddamn thing inside and will still make out with me while we’re sitting on the pavement inside. What, where’s my sense? I’ll throw a tarp down. I may even add a boombox for some makeout tunage.

Five more pictures after the jump, including one of what you’d see during a makeout session.

Missouri Real Estate - The Show Me State

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Nicknamed the “Show Me” say, Missouri is an interesting mix of big cities and rural lands. Missouri real estate prices do not require you to “show” a lot of banknotes.

Missouri Real Estate

The quintessential Midwestern state, Missouri offers interesting contrasts. On one grasp, you have large cities such as St. Louis and Kansas City. On the other, rural farmlands and towns dominate the rest of the prospect. Economically, the state is dominated by agriculture and railroad industries although typical large businesses can be found in the cities including Budweiser in St. Louis.

The start of the “show me” nickname is unknown. The state, however, was named after the Missouri Indians who lived along the banks of the Missouri River. A heartland voice, Missouri is an inexpensive place to raise a family in relative comfort.

St. Louis Real Estate

St. Louis is a diocese with an odd mix of influences. Established by the French, the city has a faint air of European influence, but a much larger heartland feel. The big apple really had hard times in the 1970s, but serious redevelopment efforts have led to a major revival. Known for the famous Consummate, the downtown and river front areas have seen major revivals with old dilapidated warehouses renovated into restaurants and hip stores. The see is also known for a very strong music scene and large parks for recreation. For professional sports, St. Louis is all about baseball, football and hockey.

Branson Real Estate

Branson is a little town in the Ozarks that has been called the family Las Vegas. The town is littered with shows and activities tailored to families. While it isn’t a house you would want to live because of the traffic, it is a good place to visit if you live in the state.

Springfield Real Estate

Seemingly the health care center of the United States, Springfield is a nice place to raise a one’s own flesh. Situated next to Burrell Park Lake, the town has seen major redevelopment. You’ll find modern warehouse lofts, out of doors cafes and trendy little shops in brick building lined streets. The park and trail system in Springfield is one of the kindest in the country.

Missouri Real Estate

Missouri real estate prices are very within reason compared to the rest of the country. A single-family home in Springfield will average $170,000, while the same home will payment $250,000 in St. Louis. Missouri real estate appreciated at a very modest 7.5 percent in 2005.

Samsung Behold (for T-Mobile) Cell Phone

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

The head-turning Samsung Behold is a responsive touch-screen cell phone with a few advanced features and a great camera.

Ginny Mies, PC World

PC World

Saturday, December 13, 2008; 12:19 AM

The 3G Samsung Behold ($150 from T-Mobile), the younger sibling of the Samsung Omnia on the Verizon network, is a slick cell phone with a bevy of advanced multimedia features and a responsive touch screen. However, the Behold lacks Wi-Fi and a standard headphone jack, and its Web browser is a bit counterintuitive.

Slightly smaller than the Omnia, the Behold measures 2.1 by 4.1 by 0.5 inches. Weighing 3.9 ounces, it’s light but feels solid in the hand.

The Behold’s 3-inch touch screen takes up the majority of the phone, and three physical keys–end, send, and back–reside underneath. The landscape touch-screen QWERTY keyboard, with generously spaced keys and vibrating feedback, is comfortable to use. I didn’t notice any lag between when I typed and when the results appeared on the screen, a problem I’ve experienced with some other touch-screen keyboards. The Behold’s predictive text feature gives two word choices, but you can also turn predictive text off with a dedicated key on the keyboard. The arrangement includes a few dedicated punctuation keys, as well.

The Behold uses Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, also seen on the Omnia. But unlike the Omnia, which seemed sluggish running Windows Mobile, the Behold is very responsive. The accelerometer, which reacted slowly on the Omnia, flipped from portrait to landscape quickly and smoothly on this handset. I encountered some lag only when I scrolled through lists of contacts or my media library. And otherwise, I found TouchWiz very user-friendly.

The lens for the Behold’s 5-megapixel camera, along with a flash, is located on the phone’s metallic back (which is available in a brushed espresso or light-rose finish). A volume rocker and a headphone/USB jack lie on the left spine of the device, while a dedicated camera key and a phone-lock key sit on the right.

Call quality was very good overall. My contacts sounded loud and clear, and I heard no static or interference. Parties on the other end heard some background noise, but otherwise the sound quality was clean. I experienced no dropped calls.

The Today screen–the Behold’s home screen–has a widget bar running along its left side. You can arrange the widgets in any order, as well as drag one into the main part of the screen to launch its respective app. To end the application, you slide the widget back onto the bar. Available widgets include a calendar, a phone book, a music player, and a clock. But other than rearranging widgets and removing them, you don’t have a lot of room for customization; you can’t add new widgets to the bar or buy new programs (there is no app store), which was disappointing.

The Behold offers a full HTML browser, which is a nice addition for a non-smart-phone handset. The browser is difficult to use on occasion: Scrolling through pages wasn’t as smooth a process as on other touch-screen browsers, and getting the hang of navigating took time. For example, to zoom in on a page, you must touch the magnifying-glass icon at the top of the browser and then select the page size to view. The phone doesn’t do Wi-Fi, either, but that didn’t seem like too big of a loss; Web pages loaded very quickly over T-Mobile’s 3G network.

The Behold’s standout feature is its 5-megapixel camera, with 4X digital zoom and a power LED flash. The camera has four resolution settings, light metering, adjustable ISO, a self-timer, a self-portrait mirror on the back cover, an antishake feature, and a setting for shooting backlit subjects. It also has three fun shooting modes (continuous, panorama, and mosaic), as well as a smile-shot mode that will take another shot if the subject is frowning.

Image quality was very good–definitely better than most camera-phone images I’ve seen. Colors were sharp and clear in photos taken both indoors and outdoors. The camera’s touch menu is intuitive, and I enjoyed trying out all of the different settings. Luckily, the Behold has 180MB of internal memory and a microSD slot for expanding the storage up to 16GB, so you have plenty of space for pictures. You can also shoot video in two resolutions (320 by 240 and 176 by 144).

The Behold isn’t a full-on multimedia powerhouse, though. I was disappointed that the Behold didn’t come loaded with the Samsung TouchPlayer, an impressive media player we tested on the Omnia. Instead, the Behold has a bare-bones music player that supports album art and playlists, and has shuffle and repeat modes plus six equalizer settings. But like the Omnia, the Behold is missing a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can’t charge the phone and listen to music at the same time. On the upside, transferring music from your PC to the Behold via the USB cable is a simple drag and drop.

Like the LG Lotus for Sprint, the Samsung Behold has some of the advanced features of a smart phone but isn’t actually a smart phone. And while smart phones aren’t necessarily for everybody, shelling out an extra $30 to 50 more for a phone with stronger multimedia features such as T-Mobile’s Android-based G1 or Apple’s iPhone is worth considering. Overall, however, the Behold is a well-designed touch-screen phone with an impressive feature set.

WORLD FOREX: Dlr Extends Rally To 1-Week Highs Vs Euro, Pound

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

TORONTO (Dow Jones)–The dollar ended higher against most widely-traded currencies other than the yen Monday, extending a positive reversal set off Friday by evidence of moderating U.S. employment losses in July.

Friday’s dollar rally on the back of a better-than-expected July non-farm payrolls report defied a long-standing trading pattern in which the lower-yielding, safe haven dollar usually was sold off whenever encouraging economic news generated an appetite for riskier currencies and other assets.

Lacking any major data Monday, the currency market continued in the incipient new vein, taking more aggressive positions in the dollar heading into the two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting that begins Tuesday.

Chief currency strategist Shaun Osborne of TD Securities said that Friday’s dollar rally does seem to have marked a "short-term sea change in sentiment" that for the time being at least is driving a widespread shake-out of previous market positioning against the dollar.

"It’s very difficult to fight the trend in the market, and right now, the market just wants to buy dollars again," Osborne said, adding that it still remains to be seen whether the present dollar turnaround will be fleeting or definitive.

Nevertheless, the dollar Monday did establish a series of near-term highs against many currencies, hitting its best intraday levels in just over one week against each of the euro, the U.K. pound, and the Swiss franc.

Most currency watchers see this week’s full slate of U.S. events as offering a more substantive test of whether the dollar is now ready to benefit from better U.S. data.

Apart from the Fed’s forward-looking guidance on U.S. and global recovery prospects due Wednesday, data such as retail sales Thursday and industrial production figures Friday will compete for market attention.

Late Monday, the euro was at $1.4142 from $1.4169 late Friday. The dollar was at Y97.11 from Y97.48, according to EBS. The euro was at Y137.32 from Y138.20. The pound was at $1.6461 from $1.6671, and the dollar was at CHF1.0853 from CHF1.0825.

Elsewhere, Scandanavian currencies like the Swedish krona and the Norwegian krone were among the biggest underperformers on the greenback’s move higher Monday.

Monday’s downgrades of the sovereign debt ratings of Latvia and Estonia by ratings agency Standard and Poor’s hit the Swedish currency particularly hard, as Swedish banks have heavy exposure to the Baltic region.

Norway’s currency registered some negative fallout from a soft domestic July inflation report that cast doubt on prospects for Norwegian rate hikes later this year or early next.

Both the krone and the krona have also been among the best performing currencies during the last few months of mounting optimism over global economic recovery, noted Marc Chandler, global head of currency strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman in New York, generating some pressure for a corrective retracement.

"The recovery story to some extent has been taken on board by the market and leaves some of the major currencies vulnerable to profit-taking," he said.

Owning a Home in Florida USA

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Owning a vacation rental property can be a wonderful thing. Imagine a home in the sunshine in the State of Florida that will bring enjoyment to both you and your family and friends. Maybe on one of the world-class beaches that the state has or how about in the Number 1 city for fun on the planet - Orlando? But what about the stuff you need to know prior to buying a vacation home?

First decision you need to consider - what do I want from my vacation home? What kind of vacationer are you? Do you like nothing better than being away from it all in a quiet residential area, off the beaten track? Where the locals are welcoming and you feel at home? Do you like beaches and relaxation by the water? Florida is lucky enough to be surrounded by it - do you want to be near it? Is activity more your thing? Florida is the golf capital of the world. Would you like a home that benefits from having a championship golf course as its’ backyard?

Another thing to think about is your family needs when it comes to accommodation. If you are parents with children, a single-family home with a pool would probably be your preferred choice. However if you are retired a 2-bedroom condo, which is very easy to maintain, may be the smarter choice.

Once you have decided what kind of home and what sort of experience you want out your purchase, then you need to decide on location. Florida is a big state with lots and lots of very different regions offering totally different types of vacations. By really deliberating on the first two questions asked, the answer to this conundrum should come a little easier.

So you now know what kind of home you want and region you want to look in. Now you need to find a Realtor to help you, as a Buyer, make the right choice and guide you via their local knowledge. How do you do this if you do not live in the area? Personal recommendations are always the best bet. Ask around your friends, family and work colleagues. Florida property purchases have been the hottest personal investment for the past 5 years. You’d be surprised once you start asking how many people knows someone who has taken the plunge and purchase a second home in Florida. If you can, talk to this second home buyer, ask them about their personal experiences. Learn from them.

You can also try doing a bit of research on the Internet. The main website for all licensed Florida Realtors is www.realtor.com Check out the Realtors licensed for the area you are interested in - tap into their local knowledge of the property market and your requirements. Ask them lots of questions to demonstrate their skills - how the market is going in the area, what constitutes a good vacation home, where are the key districts I should be looking at to suit my needs, what can I get for my budget, can I rent the home out, what sort of costs are involved when running a second home, what kind of income can I expect from a vacation home in this area.

Do your homework and use a professional to guide you! Remember, the services of a Realtor buyer’s agent are absolutely free. Choice the right Realtor for you and the process of buying a second home in Florida should be a exciting and enjoyable one.
